Living Heritage Trades Academy (LHTA)

Developed by the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation, the Living Heritage Trades Academy provides hands-on training in traditional building trades through classroom instruction, on-site learning, and paid apprenticeships. Training focuses on pre-1960 construction methods and materials, including wood window repair, preservation carpentry, and deconstruction, skills essential for maintaining San Antonio’s historic buildings and conserving original materials.

The Academy offers short-term programs that are free to eligible participants. Through partnerships with Family Service and Restore Education, apprentices also receive case management, financial coaching, and education support.

Recognized as a pre-apprenticeship program, the LHTA serves SA Ready to Work participants and creates a pathway into U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeships.

This program strengthens San Antonio’s workforce while preserving its cultural heritage. By passing on the knowledge of master craftsmen and women, we keep traditional skills alive, build neighborhood pride, and expand economic opportunity.

Since expanding in 2021, the Academy has helped trainees earn certifications, launch small businesses, and join the local preservation workforce. Partnering with LHTA strengthens your team, supports local heritage, and builds a sustainable talent pipeline for traditional trades.

If you’re a contractor or employer working on older buildings and interested in hosting an apprentice, contact Kathy Rodriguez to learn how to get started.
